Blog The Week #4
My Location
I chose to film my section of the film on the moors and I want to depict it so it gives the impression of loneliness and detachment to the audience. I plan to do this using symmetry and colour schemes inspired by Wes Anderson and Stuart Dryburgh; the other people in my group will focus on other aspects such as shape, line and texture. I think by using these two cinematic techniques and my chosen landscape it will help to get across the message I'm trying to show which is detachment and loneliness. We plan to contrast the music to the footage to show the confusion that people go through after losing someone, this will link to the footage as each section has a different emotion linked to it.
Depiction of Other Locations
This video is by Sam O'Hare and shows a variety of different areas in New York City such as harbours, building sites and busy roads. The film look like stop motion using tiny figures but the footage is of real sites in NYC. O'Hare has achieved this miniature effect by used a tilt shift lens which focuses on a small section of landscapes to make the subjects look tiny; he also shot the footage from a high angle and far away and sped the footage up in post production. O'Hare has used multiple formal elements to make his footage look amazing and flow nicely.
line
He has nicely shown the contrast of striaght and curved lines within the surroundings such as roads, paths and steps. He has also incorperated the natural lines from the divide of the sea and land.
shapes
There are many different shapes within this film that flow and contrast together. The most common shape throughout the film is the rectangle or square as O'Hare has filmed lots of buildings and building sites which follow this theme. There are also the triangular shapes of trees and bushes that are created by the roads and paths.
texture
Because O'Hare has filmed many building sites it gives an effect of a sandy and rough texture, however, he has contrasted this with the trees and water in other shots. This shows the audience how different one area of New York is to another.
colour
The main colour used in this film is a very light yellowy/brown and it has been contrasted with the greens, light blues and dark grey/blues of the trees and water.
Soviet Montage Editing
Sergei Eisenstein
Sergei Eisenstein was born on Jan 23, 1898 in Riga, Latvia and died on February 11, 1948. He was a Soviet film director and film theorist and is well known for his theory and practice of montage editing within silent films. Eisenstein preferred to focus on the technical parts of film making such as camera angles, crowd movements and montages.
Lumiere Brothers
The Lumiere Brothers were French inventors who created an early motion-picture camera and projector called the Cinématographe. Their first films were shot at 16 frames per second (FPS) and mostly consisted of shots of everyday French life e.g. the arrival of a train, a game of cards, a blacksmith, feeding a baby, soldiers marching, the bustle of a city street. They used techniques from photography to make each shot look the way they wanted which includes rule of thirds and the use of angles to create a perspective.
