Analysing Mise-en-scene with The Rule of Thirds

Mise-en-scene usually refers to how the set and props in a photo/shot is arranged. Although it can also apply to costumes, makeup, lighting and shadows, the background, where the actors are positioned and any colours used.

The Rule of Thirds helps to keep photos/shots well balanced and interesting. By placing points of interest in the intersections, along the lines or in the sections your photo/shot becomes more balanced and more interesting to look at.

I created this example of how Cary Joji Fukunaga (the director of Jane Eyre) used Mise-en-scene and The Rule of Thirds to make this shot from Jane Eyre (2011) more visually dynamic.
