Blog The Week

I started the creative media course at Plymouth College of Art today, it was a little weird as I've been at secondary school for so long and I've always had my friends around in lessons and at break and lunch. It felt as though I was in year 7 again and had to introduce myself to strangers and feel totally out of my comfort zone for a whole day.
We were given the task of creating something which would act as a little "intro to me", I found it really difficult to decide what to make and what to put in it. I asked the people around me and they didn't really know either so after a while I decided to make a poster/collage of things I liked, places I've been, pictures of friends and bands and singers I like. I mostly used pictures from my phone and edited them together in Photoshop but I finished that really quickly as I'm quite confident with it. After looking around for a while and seeing everyone else was still working I decided to create a little montage of some of the same pictures and some that I hadn't been able to include in the poster/collage. I had to use some software that I'd never used before so it took me some time to figure out what I was doing. Once everyone had finished we were given some feedback sheets to fill out and place them by someone else's work, once I had seen what everyone else had done I felt as though mine would look really rubbish as everyone else had done loads of animation, stop motion and had actually filmed stuff. We also looked at the stuff that the other courses made and there was some really cool and interesting pieces. I completed my feed back sheets and went back to where my poster and montage was, I was quite surprised to see that people actually liked what I made and had said that they like the same singers and bands that I do.

The task that we were given today was to take inspiration from Subterranean Homesick Blues by Bob Dylan and a piece of art by Gillian Wearing called "Signs that say what you want them to say, not signs that say what someone else wants you to say." She created the piece by approaching people on London streets and asking them to write something on a card and then photographing them as they displayed it. We were shown some of the pictures she took to create the piece and I've pictured the ones which spoke to me the most below.
Our Task was to put a thought about the previous day on a piece of paper and film a short clip of us with it. I've put the completed video below. Enjoy!
Our next task was to create a turn table animation which is a bit like a flip book but in a ring, as it spins you see the animation come alive. I will post the video below as well!

Today we were given some screen shots of the film One Hour Photo directed by Mark Romanek and we had to recreate them in groups. It was nice to finally work with a bigger group of people on a project even if it was a small one. After we got to grip with the film and sound equipment we got to work and we made sure that everyone had a little go with the equipment but not everyone wanted to be filmed so I volunteered to be on camera. We had a bit of a hiccup with the camera that we had as it had run out of battery but luckily someone in my group had brought theirs in so we used that to film the final shots we needed. Once everything was filmed we each got a copy of the shots and sound we recorded and we all started editing. My final piece is below.
