In order to make a storyboard for Ocean Housing I need to first look at examples of other show home videos and assess the techniques or ideas I like about them and how I could incorporate these in my own video. I also need to look at the things that I dislike about the videos and talk about how I can avoid doing them in my final video. I will then look at the Youtube.com channel for Ocean Housing and assess how my video will fit within their previous work and improve upon it.

Examples of Corporate Show Home Videos

This video was made by Story Homes and showcases their 4-bedroom detached Taunton show home at The Ridings in Carlisle, Cumbria. Overall I really like this video as it has beautiful shots of the home and surrounding areas, there were also multiple shots of each room which allowed the viewer to really take in the space. However watching the video I found it difficult to see the overall layout of the house, I can improve on this in my video by showing a small clip of the hallways to show how the rooms are connected and where they are in relation to one another. I thought it was a good idea that the director included shots of the utilities that would be included in the house such as the washing machine, oven, hobs and shower. I also liked they way they used the natural lighting to emphasise the large rooms and give the video a less corporate feel. I thought the way they used lots of camera movement was particularly good as it gave some life to the video instead of multiple still shots of a room with nothing happening. Although I think the pacing of the video was a little slow, they could have added more interesting movement or moved a little faster as some of the sections of the video were quite long and drawn out. Additionally the music used in this video is a little slow and not very engaging, for my video I'll find some upbeat background music that will set a nice positive tone for the video. Finally I thought putting the logo at the start and end of the video was a really good idea as it informs the audience of the company at the start and then reinforces their brand at the end.

This video was made by Miller Homes and showcases their 4-bedroom detached 'Harlow One' show home in Harrogate. Firstly this video uses a lot of the techniques I noticed in the previous video; lots of camera movement; showing utilities and natural lighting. However I prefer the pacing and music in this video and it's more lively and upbeat which makes it more enjoyable to watch. However I do not overall prefer this video - it uses a fade transition after every shot which, in my opinion, makes it a little disorienting. It focus' on things which aren't relevant to the audience (taps, appliances, decor, handles, etc.) and there is a lens flare effect at the end of the video which looks cheesy and unrealistic.

Ocean Housings Youtube.com Channel

A brief look at their channel shows that they only have 3 subscribers and 17 videos. Out of the 17 videos 5 are irrelevant to the company and have no information about Ocean housing, 5 are low quality videos which show members of the publics thoughts on the housing situation in Cornwall, there's 1 more high quality video showing their homes at Camelford and the last video is a timelapse video of decorating the show home at Bodmin.

This is an example of the videos of the members of the public. They're quite short and have little views due to the video not being relevant to anyone but the company. They could improve these videos by editing them together and then have a section of the video explain how Ocean Housing plans to solve the issues and problems the public have raised.

This is the most corporate style video on their channel, however, it's quite dull as its not colour graded well/at all and the music isn't very uplifting or happy sounding. It also doesn't have any information on the homes or how to contact the company if a viewer was interested in the homes. They could improve this video by changing the music to be more upbeat and colour grading it better so it's more colourful and interesting to look at. They could also add a voice over or some text to give some information about the company/homes.

The latest video on their channel is this timelapse of people decorating the show home, it has the most views on their channel which shows people are interested in the new properties however the video isn't very engaging as there is no music and has some awkward transitions between shots. It does however, give a little detail about the video and lets the audience know where the show home is. Nevertheless there is no information on how to contact the company or arrange a viewing of the show home. They could improve this video by adding music, improve the editing style and adding more information.

From these videos I can infer that Ocean Housing really need to improve their branding - particularly online, and to help them do this I am going to ensure the my final video for them is not only professional but also is relevant to their brand and target audience. I can do this by including voice overs or text giving information on the company and their new properties. Furthermore I will include the target audience in the video by having a young family interacting with the show home or Ocean Housing employees, this will ensure that the video shows who the target audience directly is for the video and therefore will be better received by them.
