For this project entitled 'Commercial Media' I have completed a music video for the song Desire by Years & Years. The purpose of the video in a commercial sense is to promote the song, band and drive sales and interest. The video will do this because people are more likely to to listen to the song if they have something to watch at the same time. Music videos also shows the style and genre of the music the artist makes, which should appeal to the target audience.
The target audience for my piece is young people from 15 to 25 years of age, which is similar to the bands target audience of 16 to 34 years of age [1]. This is because younger people are more active on youtube and other forms of social media and are therefore more likely to watch and share the video. Their social grade is typically from C2 to B as popular jobs among Years & Years fans are very modern and media based, such as: fashion design, advertising/ marketing and entertainment [2]. A popular hobby amongst their fans is using the internet and they have a strong interest in music which fits really well with making a music video as it can be easily shared with their friends who might have also enjoy the artists music, this will then boost the artists audience and sales of a particular song. I have used the theme of relationships in this video as this is a big part of the target audience's lives and it is important to have something that they can relate to in a video. I have posted the video on youtube as my researched showed it is the best video sharing platform to upload a video on to maximise views [3].
I had the basic idea of the video I wanted to make before I started researching, so some of the work I did was only beneficial to my idea at the time such as my research into Get Out. However, I did use the rest of my research and experiments to guide me to my end result.
The project looks totally different to my initial idea, however, I do think this project has gone really well and the end result is one of my favourite pieces that I have made. I think I definitely achieved my goal of creating a Super 8 style video with double exposure and the theme of memories. In particular I think the cinematography of the shots I picked fitted well with the style I wanted the video to be and the effects I added on top looked really nice and realistic. To improve this video I should have gotten a better quality tripod to film and a proper green screen background for some shots I had planned, as the shots I did film for this section of the video were shaky or weren't at a good height so I chose not use them as they would have looked bad and ruined the overall look of the video.
The main thing I have learnt from this project is to work out a clear storyline and plot I want to tell in the video and then figure out what I shots can include to really make this point clear and understandable. This is because I think I should have included more shots of the other girl in the video and shots of them both of them together as the storyline wasn't as clear as it could be. This project will definitely impact future projects as I have discovered that I really like the style of the video I made and I would really like to experiment more with the Super 8 style or other vintage camera styles.
